Zimbabwean Journalist Blessed Mhlanga arrested amidst controversy

Date: Feb 25, 2025

A Zimbabwean independent journalist, Blessed Mhlanga, has been arrested and charged with two counts of contravening Section 164 of the Criminal Law.

This section pertains to the unlawful transmission of a data message to any individual, group, or the public, with the intent to incite acts of violence using a computer or information system.

The arrest follows an interview conducted and published by Mhlanga with ZANU-PF Central Committee member and war veteran Blessed Geza, who opposes the extension of President Emmerson Mnangagwa's term in office.

According to Mhlanga's Lawyer, Chris Mhike, the journalist was detained overnight despite voluntarily handing himself into the authorities. Mhike expressed frustration over the detention, stating, "Unfortunately, the journalist Blessed Mhlanga has been charged and detained overnight. What is frustrating is the fact that this journalist handed himself in. He reported to the police station voluntarily having learned that police wanted to interview him. After the recording of the statement, we had hoped that they would release him, and he would go back to the police station and court to answer the charges he is facing, but they were adamant that he spend the night in the cells."
