The announcement was made following the conclusion of interviews in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Judge Mlambo was selected from a shortlist of three senior judicial leaders, which included Northern Cape Judge President Pule Tlaletsi and Free State Judge President Cagney Musi.
JSC Commissioner Advocate Sesi Baloyi confirmed the commission’s decision, saying, “The JSC has decided to advise the President that J.P. Mlambo of the Gauteng Division is suitable for appointment as Deputy Chief Justice.”
The position has remained vacant since former Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya was elevated to Chief Justice in September last year. Mlambo's nomination now awaits formal consideration by President Cyril Ramaphosa, who will make the final decision.
