He was speaking at the third G20 Sherpas Meeting currently taking place at the Sun City Resort in the North West province, as the United Nations (UN) marks its 80th anniversary.
Lamola’s comments come in the wake of heightened geopolitical tensions, including last week’s military strikes by the United States (US) on Iranian targets. He echoed recent warnings by UN Secretary-General António Guterres about the dangerous consequences of escalating military action.
“Following last week's US military strikes in Iran, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said at this acute hour, it is critical to avoid a spiral of chaos,” Lamola told delegates. “The UN was founded 80 years ago to deliver collective security through cohesion and to extinguish the law of the jungle.”
Lamola described the current state of international relations as one marked by "evolving global disorder", which he said disproportionately threatens the weak and the defenceless.
Lamola’s remarks are part of a broader push by SA during its G20 presidency to promote multilateralism and cooperation over unilateral military action.
