Eritrean President issues caution to Ethiopia as tensions rise in the horn of Africa

Date: Jul 22, 2025

Eritrea President Isaias Afwerki has issued a stern warning to neighbouring Ethiopia, raising concerns about the possibility of renewed conflict as tensions grow in the Horn of Africa.

In a recent discussion, journalist Coletta Wanjohi explained the background to the President’s remarks. “Afwerki’s statement comes at a time when relations in the region remain delicate, particularly following increased activity near the Eritrea-Ethiopia border,” she said.

Afwerki has cautioned against any actions that could undermine the current stability, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and avoiding provocations that could lead to further instability.

According to Wanjohi, “The message from Eritrea’s leadership is clear, they are keeping a close watch on developments and have warned Ethiopia to avoid moves that could result in fresh conflict.”

The warning comes amid wider concerns about security in the region, where political uncertainty and humanitarian pressures continue to create a fragile environment.
