SA commemorates centenary of Pan-Africanist's birth

Date: Mar 28, 2025

South Africa (SA) is marking the centenary of Professor Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, the esteemed anti-apartheid leader and founding President of the Pan-Africanist Congress (PAC), born on December 5, 1924.

Known for his pivotal role in the struggle for national liberation, Sobukwe’s legacy continues to inspire generations.

To honour his contributions to the fight for freedom, the Freedom Park Heritage Site and Museum, in partnership with the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Trust, is hosting a commemorative event at the Botanical Gardens in Graaff-Reinet. The event features dialogues with thought leaders, cultural performances, and reflections on Sobukwe’s Pan-Africanist philosophy, emphasising the importance of preserving his memory.

Dr Jane Mufamadi, Chief Executive Officer of Freedom Park, explained that this event aligns with the institution’s mission to honour those who contributed to SA's liberation. “We are remembering Professor Sobukwe because he was one of the towering figures in our liberation struggle,” Mufamadi stated, noting that his commitment to a non-racial society and his powerful belief that “there is only one race, the human race” remain deeply relevant today.

The commemoration includes a prayer at the Methodist Church, where Sobukwe was a member, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the cemetery, and a series of dialogues reflecting on Sobukwe's life and values. The day’s activities also highlight the Ubuntu initiative, led by the National Heritage Council, which engages communities in discussions about solidarity, equality, and social responsibility.

Mufamadi also shared plans to launch an exhibition at Freedom Park to educate South Africans about Sobukwe’s critical role in the liberation struggle and his lasting influence on the nation’s history.
