The standoff centres on the repatriation and burial arrangements, which have been halted by the family following disagreements over the funeral programme. Lungu’s remains were due to return from South Africa this week after days of negotiations, but the family accused the government of excluding them from key decisions.
Zambian historian Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa says the controversy highlights deeper issues: “This is more than a disagreement over funeral plans. It reflects ongoing tensions about legacy, national identity, and political divisions within Zambia.”
