This comes as the organisation together with other stakeholders intensified rescue operations in the town of Mthatha, which they consider the area most affected by the floods. The death toll now stands at 90. Head of Gift of the Givers' Search and Rescue, Ahmed Bham says rescinding water levels will aid in recovery efforts.
“We didn't know it was such large scale devastation. Our teams responded once we got a call from police last week. We sent a rapid response team to assist with rescue efforts and I came a few days later with teams but since team one arrived from the beginning stages. There's been allot of body recoveries that started happening already on the ground.
They recovered 8, then they recovered 6 and then they recovered more, teams are extensively working, but what was tragic is, you know once we were conduction aerial services and we looked at the devastation and the area is so widespread,” Bham said.
