Nearly 700-million people are living in poverty: SA President

Date: Nov 19, 2024

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has revealed that nearly 700-million people are living in poverty, with more than 60%  of those living in Sub-Saharan African countries being affected.

Speaking at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Ramaphosa also emphasised that many of the affected countries are grappling with the severe impacts of climate change.

According to the World Bank, nearly 700 hundred million people are currently living in extreme poverty.

This is unacceptable. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for more than 67% of these people.

At the same time, countries with developing economies are faced with declining economic growth prospects, declining investments, rising debts, and are also suffering from the degradation of climate change.”
