Zimbabwean truckers begin shutdown over Mnangagwa

Date: Apr 22, 2025

A two-day nationwide shutdown spearheaded by the African Unite Borders Bus Trucks Association began today in Zimbabwe.

The group cites a range of unresolved concerns, chief among them the continued leadership of Emmerson Mnangagwa as President of Zimbabwe and Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The association is calling for swift intervention from the South African (SA) Presidency and the Zimbabwean High Commission, saying the status quo is no longer sustainable.

Association Chairperson Phumudzo Mukhwathi said the protest is not just about logistical frustrations at the borders, but also about broader political accountability. He urged Zimbabwean nationals living in SA to support the movement and take part in efforts to bring about change in their home country.

“We’re asking our brothers and sisters not to stand by while others take up the struggle,” Mukhwathi said during a public address. “Freedom is not something handed over, it must be claimed. It’s time for Zimbabweans to rise and demand better.”

He also made a controversial appeal to Zimbabwean sex workers in SA, urging them to take part in the demonstrations rather than remain on the sidelines. “No one will reclaim the country on your behalf,” he added.

The shutdown is expected to impact cross-border trade and transportation along key regional routes, with delays anticipated at several major border posts. As of this morning, no official statements have been issued by either the SA government or Zimbabwean authorities.

It remains to be seen whether the association’s demands will gain traction beyond this initial round of protests.
