Study identifies two new breast cancer genes in SA black women

Date: Jun 12, 2025

A new genetic study has found that genes not associated with breast cancer in women of African ancestry has found it to contribute to 30% of breast cancer cases in South Africa (SA).

This research done by the Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS).

According to WITS, a seminal genetic study published in Nature Communication has discovered two genetic variants linked to breast cancer in black SA women, deepening knowledge about the genetic basis for this disease in African populations.

The Genome-Wide Association study of breast cancer is the first to have been done in African women living on the continent.

The two new genetic variants were identified in black SA women with breast cancer enrolled in the Johannesburg Cancer Study.
