Calls intensify for clarity on Miss SA finalist nationality

Date: Aug 2, 2024

South Africa’s Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has applauded ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula for calling on the Home Affairs Minister to interpret the laws regarding the nationality of Miss South Africa finalist Chidimma Adetshina.

This is as Adetshina continues to receive backlash from social media users for having Nigerian lineage and contesting in the pageant.

Some people are calling for her disqualification.

McKenzie says if there is proof that Adetshina is a South African citizen, he will be the first person to apologise.

“I like what the Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC) has done, Fikile Mbalula. He has called on Minister Leon Schreiber, I’m doing the same. Sort this matter, is unfair for the young lady, it’s unfair for the people that want to hear the truth. Just come out and sort it out. Home Affairs should tell us, is she South African, they should know and that is my call today to the honorable minister, he must just tell us if the lady is South African or not?
