SA President suspends Gauteng DPP amid inquiry

Date: Jul 22, 2025

South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the immediate suspension of Advocate Andrew Chauke, who serves as the Director of Public Prosecutions for South Gauteng.

This action comes as an inquiry is launched to assess Chauke’s suitability to remain in his position.

Chauke did not provide sufficient justification to oppose the suspension. In a formal letter, Ramaphosa explained that allowing Chauke to continue in his role while facing serious allegations would damage the reputation of the National Prosecuting Authority.
