Duma Boko ushers in new era for Botswana

Date: Nov 4, 2024

Duma Boko has been inaugurated as the President of Botswana, signalling the end of nearly sixty years of Botswana Democratic Party rule.

The 54-year-old Human Rights Advocate and leader of the Umbrella for Democratic Change coalition was sworn in on Friday in a ceremony presided over by the Chief Justice.

This event marked a significant turn in the nation's democratic journey, as President Boko's ascension to power represents the first time the opposition has taken office in the country's history.

The closed-door inauguration was a momentous occasion, reflecting the peaceful transfer of power and the resilience of Botswana's democratic institutions.
