The organisation argues that the Act fails to meet its constitutional goals of transparency, openness, and accountability, particularly objecting to provisions that allow donations below five thousand dollars to remain undisclosed.
My Vote Counts' Senior Researcher, Joel Bregman, emphasised the importance of transparency in political funding to help people vote from an informed position.
"We are saying that the limits, the $5418 and then $800 000, are unjustifiably high, and we need to have them lowered. We are asking for seven things specifically. We are saying that all donations should be disclosed regardless of the amount, and we are asking the court to direct Parliament to rework this number. We also speak about cumulative donations that need to be regulated and limited. Additionally, we address expenditure as an important part of this, so for public funding, parties have to report on how they spend their funds," Bregman stated.
