Top African official in US Government to leave in July: Sources

Date: Jun 13, 2025

The top official handling African policy in United States (US) President Donald Trump’s administration, is expected to leave his post in mid-July, two sources said on Thursday

Troy Fitrell has been running the Bureau of African Affairs at US State Department in the absence of an officially nominated assistant secretary of State under Trump.

Fitrell will leave his post on July 15, one source with direct knowledge of the decision told Reuters. It was not immediately clear why he is leaving. Fitrell shared his plans to leave by that date over an email, a second source said. Reuters did not review the email.

He told reporters last month that he had tasked US Ambassadors on the continent to find commercial opportunities for US companies. The Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment, neither did Fitrell.
