SA GNU disagreeing on budget gives other parties reason to mobilise: Analyst

Date: Mar 11, 2025

Political Analyst Dr Levy Ndou says disunity in South Africa's (SA) Government of National Unity (GNU) regarding the budget will give other political parties a reason to start mobilising communities.

Most political parties, even within the GNU, are opposed to any Value Added Tax (VAT) increase ahead of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s tabling of the 2025 Budget Speech on Wednesday.

Ndou says there are still ongoing discussions among the GNU partners to ensure unity.

“Of course, you should always expect that there could be this kind of discussion and activities because the parties cannot be in a position to agree. My view is that the Minister would try his best to ensure that he is able to play the game that would at the end of the day be able to satisfy especially the GNU partners in government.”

He adds, “You should expect this kind of other activities from other political parties because when there is no unity in the GNU it is a good chance for those that are outside the GNU to act and to start mobilising communities around such issues.”
