AUBBTA condemns attack at fleet Africa Bus Rank in Johannesburg

Date: Dec 12, 2024

The African Unite Borders Bus Trucks Association (AUBBTA) has condemned an attack at the Fleet Africa Bus Rank in Newtown, Johannesburg, South Africa which occurred this week.

Suspected hitmen reportedly targeted cross-border buses, resulting in the death of a crew member during a shootout.

AUBBTA Chairperson Phumudzo Mukhwathi has accused the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport in Johannesburg of misleading the public about closing down illegal bus ranks, which are reported to be the source of the violent attacks.

"We condemn and are frustrated by the actions of suspected hitmen and the burning of a cross-border bus at Fleet Africa. We also want to send our condolences to the bus crew who lost their lives in this heinous crime. Such criminal activities, including the existence of illegal bus ranks in Johannesburg, endanger the innocent lives of passengers. Even the office of MMC Kenny Kunene is aware of this issue, yet he falsely claims in the media that he has closed some of these illegal ranks, which is not true," Mukhwathi stated.
