Botswana's Ian Khama bids farewell to politics for Chieftaincy, Pan-African projects

Date: Nov 6, 2024

Former Botswana President Ian Khama has announced his departure from the political scene to embrace his role as chief of the Bamangwato tribe in Serowe on a full-time basis.

Khama, who played a pivotal role in establishing a new political party following a rift with his successor, Mokgweetsi Masisi, expressed contentment with the recent electoral developments.

Khama's decision comes after a reflective period post-election, culminating in a definitive step back from politics.

He articulated his intentions to focus on his Chieftaincy and contribute to unifying initiatives across the continent. Among these is the Pan African Heritage Museum, a project close to his heart, where he serves as a patron.

The museum, currently under construction in Ghana, symbolises a broader commitment to celebrate and consolidate African unity and heritage.
