Africa’s largest hospital sees concerning rise in severe burn patients

Date: May 12, 2025

Doctors at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, in the South African (SA) township of Soweto, say the facility is witnessing a rise in severe burn injuries

This, as SA marks National Burns Awareness Week, which ends on Monday.

The hospital, which is the largest hospital in Africa and seventh largest hospital in the world, has one of the biggest burns units in the country. The unit's Director, Professor Adelin Muganza says the rise in burn cases is concerning.

“We have an average of 1500 burn patients every year. But you must understand as well that those are selected patients. Because we only take severely burnt patients, small burns we prefer those patients to be treated at the referral hospitals or clinics,” Muganza said.
