SA’s Independent Committee to investigate church rape cases

Date: Apr 18, 2025

The head of the South Africa’s (SA) Independent Section 22 Committee established to investigate incidents of rape and other transgressions in the church, says they will ensure that no crime committed in church goes unpunished.

The establishment of the committee comes after the acquittal of Nigerian televangelist, Timothy Omotoso, in a rape trial which recently sparked controversy in the province of the Eastern Cape High Court.

Earlier this week, Cultural, Religious and Linguistic (CRL) Commission Chairperson, Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva, briefed the media over the mandate of the committee saying the move is not to regulate and dictate to the church but to restore some order in the religious sector.

Independent Section 22 Committee, Professor Musa Xulu, "And we should also be meeting with the National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services. We must also know when these people who commit some of these crimes, when they come out of prison.

Because suddenly they become extremely religious and they start working with children, it usually becomes problematic. So it's part of the consultations."
