Rwanda's Foreign Affairs Minister calls for a political dialogue on DRC

Date: Jan 31, 2025

Rwanda's Foreign Affairs Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe has called for a political dialogue on the growing crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC).

Nduhungirehe says military solutions have failed in the past and will not resolve the current crisis. Thirteen South African (SA) National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers have been killed in fierce clashes between the M23 rebels and DRC army. The rebels have since captured the strategic city of Goma.

Nduhungirehe says past mistakes should be avoided, "The military solution failed and then we cannot make again the same mistakes and hoping having different results.

So this time around it's now or never to think about a broad political discussion between the government and M23 to address the root causes of this conflict. Which include the marginalisation of persecution of the Congolese Tutsi in eastern DRC."

Meanwhile, the SADEC meeting comes after Nduhungirehe said SANDF members are at his country's border.  Nduhungirehe says Rwanda does not have any aggressive posture against SA, but it is ready to defend itself if attacked.

According to Nduhungirehe the DRC government which he says wants to overthrow the Rwandan government, has invited SA, “Rwanda have defensive measures to protect its population because there is a permanent threat that was fuelled by President Felix Tshisekedi who has said in several occasions that that he wants to overthrow the government of Rwanda. He wants to bomb Kigali.

Actually we have received information that it was a matter of days or weeks.”
