Both sides in Sudan accused of war crimes as aid workers, hospitals attacked: UN

Date: Jun 18, 2025

Investigators appointed by the United Nations (UN) have concluded that both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are responsible for war crimes.

The civil conflict continues to deepen, claiming more lives and pushing communities to the brink of famine.

The findings were presented in an update to the UN Human Rights Council this week, where the fact-finding mission pointed to a growing list of violations committed by both sides. Among the most serious incidents was the bombing of a UN humanitarian convoy on June 2 in Alcoma, en route to Al-Fisher. The strike killed five staff members and has been strongly condemned by rights experts.

The RSF has also been accused of launching repeated shelling attacks on the Saudi Hospital in Al-Facia, more than a dozen times, according to investigators. Humanitarian worker Reshma said such attacks are directly fuelling starvation.

“These are not just attacks on buildings, they are attacks on lifelines,” she said. “When humanitarian workers are targeted and food routes are cut off, it means starvation for entire communities. People lose access to basic essentials, even to community kitchens that feed displaced families.”

The latest report also highlights a sharp increase in sexual and gender-based violence, particularly in areas under RSF control. Investigators say women and girls have been subjected to rape, gang rape, abduction, forced marriage and sexual slavery, especially in displacement camps.

The UN has called for both factions to be held accountable, warning that the situation in Sudan is spiralling further into a humanitarian catastrophe.
