SA Professional Teachers' Organisation calls for investigation into unqualified teachers in schools

Date: Jan 10, 2025

The National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) has urged the South African Council for Educators (SACE) to investigate the increasing number of unqualified teachers working in schools.

This call to action follows numerous reports of unqualified educators, including student teachers, being hired to teach at various private schools across the country.

Basil Manuel, Naptosa's executive director, highlighted the growing concern among parents regarding the employment of unqualified student teachers, particularly in lower-end independent schools.

"The problem is we don't know the numbers, but certainly there are growing reports, primarily from parents, of unqualified and also student teachers being employed primarily in our independent schools. This is the lower-end independent schools...that doesn't mean that governing bodies in your public schools are not doing the same. We are saying we have to protect the profession but we also gotta protect the children and the parents in extension," Manuel explained.
