The protests were being organised by the party’s Deputy President, Alfred Gangata, who cited internal consultations as the reason for the temporary halt. Gangata confirmed the suspension in an interview with Malawi correspondent, Kondwani Nyamasauka.
“We have decided to hold off for now. This was not an easy decision, but it is necessary as we reassess certain logistical and strategic matters,” Gangata said.
The DPP, which governed Malawi until it was voted out in 2020, has been increasingly vocal about the country’s economic challenges and what it describes as the current administration’s failure to address the cost of living and joblessness, particularly among the youth.
Although the demonstrations have been put on hold, Gangata stressed that the party remains committed to holding the government accountable. No new date has been announced for the rescheduled protests.
