The launch was held at the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome in Johannesburg on Tuesday night, the Wits MIND Institute is dedicated to advancing the science of machine, human, and animal intelligence while addressing Africa’s unique challenges through cutting-edge technologies and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The institute has a cohort of 34 research fellows and it aims to welcome academics from other African universities in 2025.
According to Wits, the institute was initially conceptualised in 2017 by Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, now the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Wits, the late Professor Barry Dwolatzky, and Dr. Solomon Assefa, who was then the research director at IBM Africa.
Vilakazi described the initiative as pivotal for the continent.
“Africa needs an institute like the Wits MIND Institute with a bold agenda to push future-shaping AI research and innovation. By developing and deploying AI models and dictating policies that consider the culture and diversity of over one billion people on the continent, the Wits MIND Institute will ensure that Africa has a seat at the global AI table," says Vilakazi.
A new era of AI for Africa
The Wits MIND Institute is unique in its focus on foundational AI research, rather than just applications. According to Professor Benjamin Rosman, the Institute’s Director, this approach will drive the development of the next generation of AI.
“At the Wits MIND Institute, we care deeply about how we understand and can advance the fundamental science of AI itself to build the next generation of AI right here in SA.”
By examining intelligence holistically, the institute seeks to integrate insights from machine learning, neuroscience, and natural intelligence to inspire innovative solutions.
Driving innovation tailored for Africa
The Wits MIND Institute is committed to addressing Africa’s unique challenges by developing homegrown AI technologies and fostering local expertise. Collaborations with industry leaders such as IBM Research Africa will help accelerate innovation.
Dr Charity Wayua, Director of IBM Research Africa, highlighted the impact of this partnership.
"Our collaboration with the Wits MIND Institute underscores the importance of fundamental AI research that reflects Africa’s unique needs and values. Together, we aim to foster local expertise and drive meaningful change.”
