Calls mount for SA Police Minister to be fired

Date: Jul 13, 2025

Opposition political parties in South Africa (SA) have continued calls for Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu to be fired ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa's address to the nation

Ramphosa’s address comes exactly a week since KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made explosive allegations against Mchunu. Mkhwanazi has also accused Mchunu of authorising the controversial disbandment of the political killings task team without the approval of the provincial or national commissioners.

Furthermore, Mkhwanazi has also accused Mchunu of links to notorious criminals who have infiltrated the criminal justice system. Both the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Umkhonto weSizwe parties have opened criminal cases against Mchunu, while the Economic Freedom Fighters have called for his immediate suspension. The DA has accused Mchunu of misleading the public and breaching his constitutional duties.

On the other hand, the Umkhonto we Sizwe party has opened a case of obstruction of justice, abuse of power and conspiracy to undermine investigations.
