Government making progress in handling vessels at SA’s 12 fishing harbours

Date: Jul 14, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Department says it is making steady progress in handling vessels at twelve proclaimed fishing harbours in the Western Cape Province

The department's Minister, Dion George says over 300 vessels are currently moored across the twelve Proclaimed Fishing Harbours, which handled more than a thousand last year.

George says improvements have been made in safety, signage and infrastructure to support local fishing communities. This will improve access, navigation and security at high-risk locations such as Saldanha and Paarden Island.
