UN celebrates Lesotho's bicentennial, 58th Independence Day

United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Basotho nation on the remarkable occasion of their 200th anniversary since its formation by King Moshoeshoe I in 1824.

The Deputy Secretary General's presence also marks the celebration of Lesotho's 58th year of independence.

During her address, Mohammed highlighted the nation's enduring commitment to peace, as exemplified by King Moshoeshoe's choices during times of conflict.

She praised Lesotho for its open-heartedness in providing refuge to those fleeing wars across the globe, stating, "In times of conflict and colonial displacement, His Majesty chose the path of peace. His approach was revolutionary in building a nation founded on dialogue, inclusion, and peaceful alliances. His generosity and wisdom often disarmed opponents, and his embrace of diversity, welcoming refugees and different groups into his growing nation, contributed to creating a stronger and more resilient country."

The UN Deputy Secretary General's commendation serves as a reminder of Lesotho's significant role in fostering peace and unity in the face of adversity, setting an example for nations worldwide.
