SA court sentence three undocumented Zimbabweans to two life terms

Date: Oct 1, 2024

Three undocumented Zimbabweans have been sentenced to two life terms each by the high court in Pretoria, South Africa after they were found guilty on two counts of murder.

They were sentenced to an additional 10 years each for attempted murder and 12 months for being in the country illegally.

Edison Ngamiko, Amos Masiya and Edron Chisanako committed the crimes in 2023.

The court heard that Chisanako shot two teenage girls and a young woman outside a tavern at Olivenhoutsbosch in Pretoria after demanding sexual favours which they refused. The 16-year-old who was shot in the neck survived and reported the incident.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana,” In court they pleaded not guilty to the charges and denied committing the offences, however the state presented compelling evidence that established the trio's common purpose in committing the crimes. The NPA welcomes the sentence in hopes that the sentence will serve as a strong reminder that violent crimes will not be tolerated and reinforces the organization's commitment to combating gender-based violence and protecting the safety of all citizens."
