SANDF working to withdraw troops stranded in DRC

Date: Apr 16, 2025

Chief of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), General Rudzani Maphwanya, says the military is working hard to ensure the safe withdrawal of SA troops from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

This follows a confrontation between SANDF forces and M23 rebels in Goma, eastern DRC, in January, which has left the soldiers stranded.

Maphwanya confirmed that a team is currently working on finalising the logistics of the withdrawal.

“We are already starting with the process of getting the people to check what are the best possible ways to get our people out, and that has been concluded,” he said.

He added that the matter was recently discussed at a meeting of the Chiefs of Defence Forces in Dar es Salaam. “That meeting resolved that we should have a technical team that comes together. And that technical team is the one currently busy in Tanzania, finalising the issue of withdrawal of our members,”said Maphwanya.
