Mathipa was fatally shot in Gauteng in 2023 while working with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation. The accused are facing charges including murder, kidnapping, fraud and perjury.

At the time of his death, Mathipa was probing claims that SANDF Special Task Force members abducted an Ethiopian businessman from Johannesburg’s Mall of Africa in 2022. The businessman is believed to be linked to ISIS.
