Makhanya was killed in a shootout with SA police in the town Amanzimototi in the KwaZulu-Natal province on Friday. He had rented an apartment in Amanzimtoti, where he was killed during a shootout with police. The friend says he prayed with Makhanya, moments before police gained entry to the apartment.
The friend, who asked to remain anonymous, says Makhanya confessed to the murder. Asked why he did not contact the police when Makhanya made contact with him, the friend said it was out of fear.
“Makhanya told me what makes him reluctant to hand himself over to the police was that he has been arrested before and has pending cases, I became afraid. Out of fear I could not bring myself to contact the police, I was scared to call the police or even touch my phone. I could not call anyone,” the friend said.
