George Clooney calls on US President to drop out of 2024 presidential race

Date: Jul 11, 2024

Hollywood actor, George Clooney, has called on United States (US) President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

Writing in an op-ed in the New York Times published yesterday, the Oscar winner said he was a lifelong Democrat, who had last month co-hosted the single largest fund-raiser supporting any Democratic candidate for Biden’s re-election.

“I love Biden. As a Senator. As a Vice President and as President. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him. Believe in his character. Believe in his morals. In the last four years, he’s won many of the battles he faced,” Clooney wrote.

“But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time.”

Biden’s halting June 27 debate performance against Donald Trump and low public approval have raised fresh doubts among some Democrats about his ability to win or to keep up with the demands of his grueling job for another 4-1/2 years.

A growing number of Democrats in the US Congress have said they worried that Biden, 81, could not beat Trump in the November 5 vote.

But the president continues to argue that he is best positioned to defeat former President Trump, 78, whom he casts as a singular threat to American democracy. “This is about age. Nothing more. But also nothing that can be reversed. We are not going to win in November with this president,” Clooney wrote.

The actor said changing nominees in a short space of time would be “messy”, but added: “Would it enliven our party and wake up voters who, long before the June debate, had already checked out? It sure would.

“Biden is a hero; he saved democracy in 2020. We need him to do it again in 2024,” Clooney wrote.
