Date: Oct 6, 2024

South Africa’s (SA) Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Bantu Holomisa, has called on the African Union (AU) to have mechanisms that will deal with acts of violence and coups on the continent.

By Ditaba Tsotetsi

He was addressing the African Peace and Security Dialogue in Magaliesburg in Gauteng.

Holomisa says it is concerning to have democratically elected governments being removed through coups.

“Many of the conflicts we witness today are driven not only by internal political instability but by the desire of powerful individuals and foreign interest to control specific products and resources such as minerals, oil and other valuable commodities. These resources which should be used for the best of African nations often become the source of exploitation and manipulation.”
