Provincial Director of Public Prosecutions declines prosecution in Phala Phala Farm Case, involving SA President

Date: Oct 11, 2024

South Africa's Limpopo province's Director of Public Prosecutions, Ivy Thenga, has announced a decision not to pursue legal action in the Phala Phala farm theft incident.

The case, which involved allegations against President Cyril Ramaphosa and Major General Wally Roode concerning money laundering and corruption, has been under scrutiny following the theft of approximately $580 000 from the Phala Phala Farm in Bela Bela.

The decision arrives after an exhaustive review of the evidence by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI).

Despite the serious nature of the allegations brought forth by Arthur Fraser, the DPCI's investigation concluded that the prospects for a successful prosecution were non-existent.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga confirmed that the evidence within the police docket did not present a viable chance for a conviction, leading to the DPP's decision to drop the charges.

This announcement closes a chapter on a case that has captured the nation's attention, raising questions about the integrity of high-profile individuals and the robustness of the country's legal processes.

The DPP's office has emphasised that the decision was made impartially and solely based on the merits of the available evidence.
