Outgoing SA Hawks Head honoured following 7-year role in fight against corruption

Date: Apr 15, 2025

The outgoing National Head of South Africa’s priority crimes investigations unit, also known as the Hawks, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, says the unit has managed to dismantle various criminal syndicates in the past seven years

Lebeya is on his final national tour to bid farewell to members of the entity. Speaking during an address in the province of Limpopo on Monday, he highlighted how, during his tenure, the Hawks secured various convictions against syndicates that operate in the illegal mining, drug manufacturing, cash-is-transit robberies and corruption.

At the same ceremony, Lebeya’s colleague in Limpopo, Major General Gopz Govender, gifted his superior with the horn of a kudu, a token of the province's appreciation for his prolonged service. Lebeya says the unit has achieved a lot under his leadership, “The DPCI has in this period arrested 17 136 suspects, secured 4677 convictions. We have also dismantled 214 clandestine laboratories in the last quarter alone [and] 32 arrests were effected for those who killed police officials”, he said.

The country is facing a serious challenge as corruption eats away at it and Lebeya acknowledges this, adding that investigations into corruption have led to the collapse of a number of controversial entities, including the now-defunct VBS Mutual Bank.

“We know of the likes of VBS, those hard working investigators who have been able to record more than 2000 statements to prepare case dockets. You have got the likes of those who have been committing cash in transit robberies, including those who were challenging us in Makhado, although they also suffered to a certain extent with one of us losing a limb. But at least the work itself, anyone can see that we are hard at work”, he said.

Govender says the next generation of Hawks members can learn a lot from Lebeya's conduct in the organization, “Anti-corruption has made a dent, and we felt it so much so the MEC has engaged me. And we got a meeting with the premier, I think she wants to acknowledge some of the arrests that have been made by anti-corruption”, said Govender.
