The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) held its Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards (SBSJA) in Johannesburg last night.
The awards recognise the best in South Africa’s journalism.
They come as disinformation and misinformation threaten societal stability.
Now running for the third year, over 655 items were read, reviewed and listened to, 55 more than last year.
This year also saw growth in the indigenous community and investigative entries.
SABC News was among the big winners of the night.
Cutting Edge producers, Hlengiwe Ngwenya and Nomvuyo Ntanjana bagged awards in the indigenous language and community media and lifestyle categories.
Veteran Journalist, Hazel Freidman, who is retiring at the end of the month bagged an award in the community service reporting category for the SABC‘s current affairs programme, Fokus.
SANEF views these awards as crucial for raising public awareness about journalistic ethics.
Issues of sustainability, wellness, technology, social media and skills deficit continue to cripple newsrooms.
Standard Bank Chief Executive Officer, Lungisa Fuzile, says there’s a need to save the industry under threat.
Journalist, author and publisher, Lucas Ledwaba, bagged the Journalist of the Year award while veteran journalist, James Clarke, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously.
