SA Police Commissioner to update on impact of national operations

Date: Sep 12, 2024

South Africa's National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, is set to provide a detailed media update on the extensive operations conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) over the past month.

The briefing will also feature the National Head of the Priority Crime Investigation Unit, the HAWKS, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya who will report on the unit's achievements.

This anticipated update follows General Masemola's earlier announcement this month, where he revealed the arrest of 13 691 suspects across the nation as part of Operation Shanela.

The operation, which took place from September 2nd to 8th, targeted a range of criminal activities.

Notably, 1 953 of these arrests were of suspects wanted for serious crimes including murder, rape, and business robberies, as well as the illegal possession of firearms.

Additionally, the operation saw 1 460 drug-related arrests, 576 for illegal liquor trade, and 404 for driving under the influence, marking a substantial crackdown on crime and reinforcing SAPS's commitment to public safety.
