Speaking at a construction site during an official visit, Ruto accused some opposition-aligned groups of plotting to overthrow the government before the 2027 general elections.
"I’ve heard them say they won’t wait for the 2027 elections. They are planning chaos, protests, destruction of property, and even death, with the aim of toppling the government. I dare them to try," Ruto said.
He further warned that any attack on police officers would be treated as a declaration of war on the state.
His comments follow a wave of unrest in recent weeks, with demonstrators across the country voicing anger over rising living costs, youth unemployment, and allegations of corruption within the government. Some of the protests have turned violent, with property damaged and clashes reported between protesters and police.
While Kenya’s Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful protest, Ruto said the state would not hesitate to act decisively against those who use demonstrations as a cover for criminal activity.
