Date: Jun 3, 2025

Ugandan security forces thwarted a suspected attack near a Catholic shrine in Kampala on Tuesday, killing two alleged rebels as worshippers gathered for Martyrs' Day celebrations

Police and bomb squad units cordoned off the area around Munyonyo Martyrs' Shrine, where a body lay next to a motorcycle at the blast site. Forensic teams and investigators scoured the scene for evidence. Anatoli Muleterwa, the Commissioner of community policing for the Uganda Police Force, said heightened intelligence and surveillance had prevented the attack.

"It was an issue of intelligence, which was surveilling criminally intended elements who wanted to disrupt worshiping at this site. So as a result, our deployment was too high, the surveillance was too high. They thought they were going to get any advantage of fulfilling their mission, only to be put out of action by our security," Muleterwa said. As investigations continue, Muleterwa has added that experts and working to determine the type of explosives used and possible motives.

"All our experts are ascertaining the kind of material that was used, the number of casualties that were involved, what they could have, what could have been their motive and even assembling the images of those that could have related to this history," Muleterwa said.
