SA Police Service ready to brief President on police chief's explosive allegations

Date: Jul 9, 2025

South Africa's (SA) National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says they are ready to brief President Cyril Ramaphosa on KwaZulu-Natal Province Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s recent allegations.

Mkwanazi alleged during a media briefing on Sunday that Senior Police officials were working with syndicates to cover up high profile crimes.

Mkhwanazi also implicated Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner of Crime Detection, Shadrack Sibiya, among others in organised crime and political interference in police investigations.

Masemola has conceded that Mkhwanazi’s allegations are extremely worrying.

“The current state of affairs is unprecedented, concerning, unfortunate and requires uncompromised intervention, to restore public trust and stability in the organisation. We acknowledge and fully welcome the commitment made by Ramaphosa to elevate and prioritise this matter on his return from international travel.

Members of the media, we are ready to brief the President and as such, the national commissioner could not have done anything now.”
