No electronic voting in 2024 polls: SA electoral commission

Date: Nov 1, 2023

The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) says it has not yet finalised what electoral system to use in next year’s general elections.

The IEC has confirmed that there will therefore be no electronic voting in the 2024 general elections.

This follows the commission's announcement that it has upgraded security measures ahead of the next elections.

Last week, the IEC launched the 2024 National and Provincial Elections programme, declaring that it is ready to host millions of eligible voters at over 23 000 voting stations across the country.

“We will not have electronic voting for the 2024 general elections, mainly because we had not settled the electoral system that we were going to use in time for 2024. So it was not possible to even start talking about designing any form of electronic voting.

“Secondly, the legal provision for such voting is required, thirdly, the issue of voting technology is not well understood in the same way by all of us who are South Africans,” Mawethu Mosery, the IEC's Deputy Chief Executive Officer said.
