The theme is “Silencing the Guns, Let the Drums Roll”.

The aim of the celebrations, which Freedom Park has organised in partnership with ZA Central Registry and Registry Africa, is to celebrate unity, peace and cultural diversity in Africa.

All 55 African Union member states have been invited to participate in a symbolic, synchronised drumming performance, both physically and virtually, to honour Africa’s collective commitment to peace and unity.

Meanwhile, representatives of various civil and human rights organisations and trade unions embarked on the Africa Day Solidarity Walk in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The walk stretched from the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown to Constitution Hill, in Braamfontein, Gauteng province.
