Haniyeh was killed by an airstrike in Tehran in the early hours of Wednesday. SA has urged that a thorough investigation be conducted and has called on all parties to exercise the utmost restraint. Haniyeh was an integral member of the negotiating team, working with other countries to secure a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire and bring the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza to an end. International Relations Minister, Ronald Lamola says SA will continue to call for peace, “As the government of the republic of SA condemn it with strongest terms. It undermines the ongoing peace initiative that is at the advanced stage. It also undermines the sovereignty of another country, which is Iran. It also does not send a very good message particularly extra judicial killing. Is not in line with the international law. So it should be condemned with the strongest terms possible and we continue to call for peace in Palestine. We are hopeful that the ongoing peace initiative should not be distabilised.”
