SA government looking for land to relate survivors of deadly floods

Date: Jun 19, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Human Settlements Minister, Thembi Simelane says government is continuing to provide humanitarian assistance to Eastern Cape flood victims

Simelane says an ongoing process is underway to allocating land where affected residents will rebuild their homes. The death toll now stands at 92. Speaking on the sidelines of a memorial service for flood victims at the King Sabatha Dalindyebo TVET College, in the town of Mthatha, Simelane said some land has been identified.

“We have received a positive report from the Public Works here. I was in the town of Butterworth yesterday. There, the municipality has the municipal land ready to move those who were on the riverbanks into an area,” Simelane said.
