SA Women For Change to lead march against GBVF

Date: Apr 11, 2025

The South African (SA) advocacy group, Women For Change will lead a march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, on Friday afternoon.

The organisation is expected to hand over a petition calling on government to immediately declare Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) a national disaster.

This as the country sees an increase in GBVF incidents.

According to Police Crime Statistics, between April 2023 to March 2024, 5 578 women and 1 656 children were killed in the country.

Women For Change says the National Strategic Plan on GVBF passed in Parliament in 2020, marked a significant step toward strengthening accountability, response, and coordination in addressing GBVF in SA.

Despite the efforts, the movement says there has been a lack of urgency in implementing and funding its commitments, leading to the country experiencing its highest femicide rates to date.

They say publishing the National Register for Sex Offenders will empower communities, employers, and caregivers to take proactive steps to protect women and children.
