Zimbabwe marks 44 years of independence

Date: Apr 18, 2024

Zimbabwe marks 44 years of independence from colonial rule this Thursday.

On this day on April 18 in 1980, Zimbabwe, formerly known as Rhodesia, was freed from the British.

Opposition parties yesterday lamented that Independence Day is a painful reminder that the freedom war veterans fought for remains elusive.

They said the late President, Robert Mugabe, his successor Emmerson Mnangagwa and governing Zanu PF, have failed to deliver on the promise of a free Zimbabwe for all since 1980.
