Inquiry concludes on plane crash that claimed Malawi Vice President's life

Date: Dec 15, 2024

The Commission of Inquiry into the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of Malawi's Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others has concluded.

The report indicates that the accident was caused by a combination of human and environmental factors. According to the report, weather turbulence on June 10, 2024, at Nthungwa significantly contributed to the crash.

Chairperson of the Commission, Justice Jabbar Alide, stated that the aircraft was duly maintained.

"Based on the evidence before the Commission, it is the Commission's finding that the Dornier aircraft MAF 203 was in good condition both on the 9th June 2024 when it left Zomba airbase through Chileka to Mzuzu and on the 10th June 2024 when it left Mzuzu to KIA to pick up the late vice president. In reaching its conclusion, the Commission took cognisance of the fact that there was clear evidence that the aircraft was duly maintained and inspected in accordance with manufacturers' maintenance instructions," Alide said.
