Search resumes for man swept away by floods in SA

Date: Dec 23, 2024

A search for a man who was swept away by floods in the Hennops River in Centurion, south of Pretoria in South Africa is set to continue this morning.

The search by rescue officers was suspended yesterday due to persistent rain.

It is believed that the unidentified man jumped into the river in an attempt to run away from security guards.

Tshwane Emergency Services Spokesperson, Lindsay Mnguni, says the operation might take long due to the length of the river and bad weather.

In a separate incident still in Centurion, two bodies were retrieved from a flooding river over the weekend after a motorbike and car were swept away as the drivers attempted to cross flooding bridges in the area.

Meanwhile in Limpopo, a motorist has been swept away by a flooding stream at Shigalo village near Malamulele in Limpopo.

The deceased was crossing a swollen stream when he was swept away on Saturday morning. The deceased has been identified as Khethani Shirinda. His body was recovered along the stream.

Police and transport authorities are yet to comment.

The father of the deceased motorist, Eric Shirinda, is calling for help to conduct the burial as the family is poverty-stricken.
