The announcement was made by Minister of Information and Digitalisation Moses Kunkuyu during a press briefing in Lilongwe on Saturday.
The burial ceremony for Chilima will be held at his home village in Ntcheu, approximately 165 kilometres south of Lilongwe. According to Minister Kunkuyu, several foreign dignitaries are expected to attend the solemn event.
Born on February 12, 1973, Dr. Saulos Chilima was a prominent Ngoni from Ntcheu District and a devout Catholic. He is survived by his wife Mary and their two children. Chilima was first elected as Vice President in 2014, serving under President Prof.
Peter Mutharika until 2019. He was re-elected in 2020 on the Tonse Alliance ticket led by President Lazarus Chakwera.
During his tenure, Chilima was known for his significant contributions to Public Sector Reforms. Prior to his political career, he was actively involved in the business sector, where he gained considerable experience.
As the nation mourns, President Chakwera's declaration of a public holiday underscores the profound impact Chilima had on Malawi, both as a political leader and as a dedicated public servant.
